Occupational Therapy

Pediatric Occupational Therapy targets development of motor, sensory, and social skills needed for optimum independence in self-care, play, community, and school activities. OT helps to improve the following:

  • Fine motor (i.e., handwriting)

  • Visual motor skills (i.e., throwing a ball at a target)

  • Strength and endurance

  • Activities of daily living (i.e., dressing, feeding self)

  • Play skills targeting engagement and relating

  • Social/emotional development

  • Attention span and Regulation

  • Organization

  • Coordination

  • Body/spatial awareness

  • Self esteem

When sensory processing dysfunction limits development, occupational therapy uses specialized interventions to help the child with regulation and integration of sensory information from such systems as the auditory(listening), tactile (touch), proprioceptive (sense of one's body and position) and vestibular (sense of movement and of gravity). Our occupational therapists have advanced training and expertise in Therapeutic Listening, NeuroDevelopmental Treatment, Sensory Processing treatments, Sensory Integration, Autism - DIR/Floortime, as well as manual therapies.

Possible signs that your child could benefit from occupational therapy at our sensory gym:

  • Unable to grasp and manipulate objects well (i.e., hold pencil, cut paper, button, zip coat)

  • Seeks/Avoids sensory input (i.e., crashes body on floor, doesn’t like to be touched)

  • Bumps into furniture and people often, falls frequently

  • Difficulty jumping, skipping, or running

  • Poor social skills

  • Very high or low muscle tone

  • Difficulty transitioning between activities

  • Difficulty paying attention or focusing on task

  • Inability to self regulate for calming and organizing to perform daily life skills

  • Extreme emotional highs and lows (one minute jumping up and down laughing, another minute melting down)

Physical Therapy

Pediatric Physical Therapy is conducted in our sensory gyms with an emphasis on making it fun with motivating games and therapeutic activities.

Our PT’s specialize in a wide range of pediatric issues from infants to teens. In babies, PT helps with Torticollis and delays in development such as not walking by 18 months old. In young children, PT addresses poor balance, toe walking, coordination issues, bike riding techniques, and toes turning in while walking.

SPORTS INJURIES: Our PT’s are experts in pediatric related sports injuries such as Sever’s which is heal pain noticed when playing soccer, volleyball or basketball. Recovery from fractures and surgeries can be FUN when provided in a developmentally appropriate space with therapists who are skilled to work with children.

Our physical therapists develop strengthening and conditioning programs for children with all gross motor delays and diagnoses such as: Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cancer, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Gentle manual therapy treatments along with kinesiotaping are used by our PTs to achieve the greatest potential in freedom of movement with an aligned musculoskeletal system.

Teletherapy-2.jpg

Teletherapy

Teletherapy involves therapists providing care virtually over a computer platform.  A computer, IPad or Smart Phone can be used in the comfort of your home.  The therapist provides a link for the parent to click on before the session begins and may also send a list of items to have ready.  At the time of your appointment, you log on and see your therapist.  Parental involvement is key to making teletherapy the most beneficial for your child. Home programs can easily be developed and strengthened using teletherapy.  Get started today!

School Therapy

Feeding Therapy

OT Feeding Therapy

Is your child a picky eater? Do mealtimes create anxiety? Will your child not sit to eat? TheraFUN's OTs provide feeding therapy by incorporating a relationship based and sensory approach to get at the source of feeding issues instead of just treating the symptoms so that long term changes are observed.

Our therapists have been trained in the Get Permission Approach, along with the knowledge of sensory integration as a foundation and include how the whole body sensory challenges may impact feeding and mealtime specifically. We partner with the client and their family to make mealtime a positive and productive experience.

ST Feeding Therapy

Having trouble transitioning to solids? Does your child take a long time to eat their meal? Having trouble transitioning away from the bottle? TheraFUN has a comprehensive feeding program that can address these issues and more! SLPs provide feeding and oral motor therapy for tethered oral tissues (e.g. lip tie, tongue tie), gastrostomy status (i.e. feeding tubes), bottle feeding, cup and/or straw drinking, eating from a spoon or fork, chewing skills, swallowing skills, fatiguing during mealtimes, difficulties establishing a routine for meals, difficulties gaining weight, and diet expansion.

Our therapists have been trained in the CAN-EAT Approach, which addresses both oral-motor, sensory and behavioral difficulties with feeding. We also have a bottle-feeding specialist on staff that has been trained in the SOFFI method, which focuses on feeding fragile infants. We work closely with the family to improve nutritional status and create a positive experience around mealtime.

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy(CST) is a hands-on, whole body treatment involving gentle touch applied by trained, sensitive hands. Osteopathic physician John E. Upledger founded CST through his studies at Michigan State University as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics in the 1970s.

The practice of CST promotes a state of deep relaxation that encourages the flow of cerebrospinal fluid while releasing restrictions in the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. By connecting with the physiological system called the craniosacral system, pain and distress can be alleviated while areas of tightness release. Jodi, Cassi, and Joan have been trained to do various types of manual therapy and another type of CST as trained by Ed Stiles, DO, FAAODist. and Micha Sale, PT, M.Ed.

Jodi also practices Somatoemotional Release(SER), which is an adjunct of CST, helping the client to free both the mind and body from limitations of trauma. Jodi works on people of all ages, from infants to adults, with specialty training for pre- and post-natal care. She also has a special place in her heart for animals and has even provided relief to dogs, cats, and horses.
